Jesus Before Pilate and his Crucifixion
The people brought Jesus to Pilate because he "committed a crime" but Pilate did not know what he did. So he asks Jesus if he was "the king of the Jews" John 18:33. His response was that he was king of the Jews, the people wouldn't bring him all the way to Pilate. In the end, Pilate had no reason to find him guilty. Instead, he sent Jesus over to his soldiers to get whipped and have a crown of thorns placed on his head. After, Pilate agreed with the chanting crowd who were saying "crucify him! crucify him!" John 19:6. So they made Jesus carry a cross and walk all the way to "The Place of the Skull" John 19:17.
Now, at the time, the reason why people got crucified was because it was a capital punishment for the crimes they have committed. In Jesus' case, the people want him crucified because Jesus claimed he was God; during this period, making such claims was frowned upon.

Peter Denies Jesus (John 18:15 - 27)
As Jesus predicted in John 13:21, one of his disciples will deny him. As it turns out, the disciple who will do such an act was Peter. How he foresaw this was when he told Peter, "before the rooster crows you will say three times that you do not know me." John 13:38.
So in John 18:17, 25, and 27, before Jesus' crucifixion, Peter tells a woman at the courtyard gate and the High Priest that he does not know who Jesus is.
